A full Science Bowl team has 4 active players plus 1 alternate, for 5 students total, along with a teacher who serves as coach. Only the 4 students actively competing at the table can buzz in and answer during a match — the alternate, coach, and anyone else on the sideline can't get involved in what's being discussed or answered. Schools are often allowed to register more than one team for a regional, so being among the strongest 4 on competition day matters as much as the size of the overall roster.
A regional match is played in two 8-minute halves with a 2-minute break between them, so around 18 minutes total, while matches at the National Finals stretch to two 10-minute halves. Because a single toss-up only takes a few seconds to resolve, a half can pack in a surprising number of questions. Whichever team has the higher score when the second half clock hits zero wins the match outright.
Buzzing in before the moderator finishes reading is called an interrupt, and it's a real risk — if you answer wrong after interrupting, the other team automatically gets 4 free points without even needing to answer. If the other team was still eligible to answer, the question gets re-read from the beginning just for them, giving them their own shot at the same 4 points and a bonus. That's why buzzer speed alone isn't enough — you need to actually be confident in the answer before you hit the button.
